Serbia: eSick leave system to be implemented from March 2025

As announced by representatives of the Ministry of Health, an electronic sick leave system will be introduced in Serbia starting from March 2025. This system will significantly simplify the process of opening and managing sick leave for employees, employers, and healthcare institutions. In this way, employees temporarily unable to work will no longer need to worry about submitting a certificate of temporary inability to work to their employer, as the healthcare institution will automatically send this certificate. The doctor will enter the sick leave details into the system, including the expected duration, and the system will generate and electronically send the certificate to the employer, eliminating the need for employees to physically deliver any documents.

This is good news for employers, as it eliminates delays in submitting certificates of temporary inability to work, which are sometimes caused by forgetfulness or misunderstandings with employees. Employers will have quick access to information about the start and duration of sick leave, making it easier to track employee absences and plan business activities more efficiently.

It is important to note that employers will not have access to employees’ medical documentation but will only have access to basic information about the start date and duration of the sick leave.

Additionally, when a doctor determines that sick leave needs to be extended, the system will automatically notify the employer about the new status.

The new system simplifies administrative processes and benefits all parties involved. Employees will no longer face delays in the delivery of sick leave certificates and reports, while employers will be immediately notified of the sick leave status of their employees.
